TRACKS -- Life is a set of tracks - you put one foot in front of the other and if you don't arrive where you thought you were headed - then you make new tracks. The trouble with new tracks is, you almost always have to prove yourself over and over again. I'm tired of that.
Everyone has a success story, but success isn't always what others find interesting. It's rarely appreciated for what it was to the performer, and partially impressive (if not invisible) to others. You won't find an endless gallery depicting my past - you'll just have to believe my story.
She's worked at four legendary stations: KAZY Denver, WABT & WYSY Chicago, and WABX Detroit. Stoney had an itch for the 'niche', with a yearning for wider horizons. The opportunity came when Frank Cody, "the father of smooth jazz" was consulted by management in the midst of an administrative hiatus. Frank opened the doors of many formats in radio, as an executive for NBC, CBS, and his consultancy for the station along with the new morning team was like magic.
Stoney's positions in radio became a mixed bag of classifications, wearing numerous caps, as a producer, voice-over artist, promoter, writer, assistant P.D. and music director. It was like running a marathon. Alas, the gypsy life of radio, and stage, spun again into a wild fury of circumstances .
Just when she learned to ski, The Rocky Mountain Air-show was shipped off to Hawaii in a $2000 brown paper bag, and lost at sea --- along with the car rental keys --- never to be heard again. At least until now.
Catapulted like a fledgling at light speed across country, stopping off in Chicago for another 5 years, Stoney rested her wings on the sands of Gitche Gumee . The big city caught a virus of station buy-outs, down-sizing it's crews, selling out to the highest bidder. The wholesome life-style beckoned, the vision quest was not over -- the Gitche Gumee spirit was upon her, natives were restless, and the drums were pounding. And so she settled down like White-Dove, with Running Bear.
Time passed, the snows were heavy, the winters were long, melting almost through the summers, then rinsing and repeating. The past was gone, but not forgotten, and a new chapter opened with the internet.
At first, settling in was uncomfortable, there weren't too many phone calls, because there was no phone. The town was significantly smaller than Chicago, and getting a pizza was like pulling teeth, it was just like Garrison Keillor once said, "the little town that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve." The only bell ringing was the dinner bell. Then one day, out of the blue, a beacon of hope! Shadoe Stevens was seeking agents for his syndicated radio show ShadoeWorld. Working with Shadoe was possibly one of the best things that ever happened to Stoney, they collaborated many times -- on many projects besides ShadoeWorld. Til this day, he remains a fond and true associate and is mutually dedicated to the craft.
Broadcasting from that little lodge in the woods has extended far and wide from New York to Hawaii for such customers as Miller Advertising , Laird Christianson, Sony, & Mobi PCS, FOX TV Grand Rapids, Michigan, PBS and coordinated efforts with MSN, and CBS. It might seem like small potatoes, but this little universe has it's discount advantages for buyers -- namely, a major market voice at a minor market price.
"The isolation and snow is sometimes too much, a bit of a friar's life for two reasons: You get to converse and appreciate nature, but cuss all you want without an audience --- and then ---- there's the beer.
Optionally, (when no shovel is in hand) it's an extraordinary stage for sharpening one's wits and creating sound-proof ideas. Independent composition is a cherished moment of meditation. The big plus? The extraordinary chance to turn out some really critical masterpieces, and author two books.
A Dawning Realization
This was either my first writing assignment,
or my first protest -- Not sure. It has no place on this website, but some people really want to know where it all began.
The 2004 John Edwards Campaign
Working with the media during the Edwards campaign afforded a great opportunity to connect with Walter Mondale. Jim Oberstar on my right stated, "We have a very "religious" administration." However, I never realized how religious it was until I did more research.
Gitche Gumee The Big Gig
Alas, the gypsy life of radio brought a variety of wildly unusual circumstances catapulting her to migrate to more wholesome lifestyle along the North shores of Gitche Gumee to freelance, write, and voice from a cabin along the Great Lakes -- for such clients as Miller Advertising in New York, Mobi PCS in Hawaii, FOX TV Grand Rapids, Mi., PBS Almanac MN/WI, and integrating other talents for MSN, and CBS.
Keeping it simple & not in any hurry for that big gig in the sky .
THE TRANSINDENTALIST PHILOSOPHER & FAR-OUT ENTHUSIAST! - INTJ
Stoney has a comprehensive background in Eastern & Western philosophy and has taught multiple seminars and workshops in association with her discoveries on astrology in Denver, Chicago, Portland, and Duluth. Born an arm-chair philosopher (a natural theorist) with a love for Socrates and Plato, she persued a degree in Psychology and Philosophy at PSU and UWS, however that idea took a detour when she made an amazing correlative discovery.
When asked to write an essay on the MBTI career personality type indicator she cut through the shaffe with a comeback that shocked the counselor. This ah-hah moment was the basis of her first book, Symbols, Cycles, Spheres, and Psychology. Challenging their personality test using one blind test example, resulted in several case studies with hundreds of high school students in the area. Her finding was the ability to match personality tests before individuals took them predicting their personality type to a tee. Astounded by her discovery, technique, research, and writing , the career coach at dumbfounded , and quit. She then went on to other universities to perform the same tests ranging in nearly 100% accuracy.
To add to this list (not for the heavy headed) she keeps it entertaining with her psuedo monthly podcast called Astaradio (a 'horary' blend of tarot and astrology) which was also featured on CBS Psychics channel. It's the luck of the draw on this, and no one knows where the 'psychic roulette' wheel stops. Listen for your card this month!
The Activist - Stoney has always succumbed to her passion for activism, setting forth an incredible amount of effort in spreading awareness with regard to the rights of both people, and animals.
The Artist - Music and art merged at one point of a Saturn return -- and Stoney is still working on a project that has been laid out and on the back burner since 2000.
THE WONDER YEARS - Groovin'
Stoney's history began in Motown at the early age of 13 establishing a following as a soloist performer, She gigged endlessly, carving a path toward greater chapters performing with nearly every Detroit rock group in concert theaters, as a keyboardist and vocalist. Steady bookings, and packed houses, playing into the weary hours of night became a way of life. If you're from Detroit, you probably remember her in such groups as The Dallas Hodge and Deluxe Band, and No Foolin' and others.
Next came a major transition into the legendary radio station WABX as a parody performer, writer, and co-producer on Allan Stagg's Great Midwestern Air Show and Picture Company, Morning Side Show, and Refugee Camp.
An exhaustive list of egos swelled in one control room, a replica of serial soaps, interviews, and personalities were unleashed. Sitting along side of the notorious Cybil, Wendy O, and Sister Mary Mystery, were the performances of Allan Stagg (Uncle Al, Aging Teen Idol), Dave Segal (News), J.D. Fort and Mark Paris.
It was the crème de la crème of morning drive, opposite 2 funny guys down the dial (WRIF) and Howard Stern at W4. Despite beating the guys down the dial (including Howard) Detroit radio and WABX encountered a face lift and was sold.
The entire "circus" packed up for the frontier, (resurrected as Allan Stagg's Rocky Mountain Air-show and Picture Company, Rock n Roll Record Rodeo and Boot Camp Extravenganza (or something like that) heading West.
